Have you ever wondered how much you need to retire? Or when you can retire? Then this FIRE Calculator is for you.
This formula is based on the Trinity Study, the better-known name for a 1998 paper titled “Retirement Savings: Choosing a Withdrawal Rate that is Sustainable” published by three finance professors at Trinity University. The study led to what we now know as the 4% rule. Essentially, the theory behind the 4% rule holds that if your portfolio is invested in a mix of stocks and bonds, you’ll be able to withdraw 4% of the portfolio each year in retirement without ever running out of money.
Simply enter your estimated annual living expenses for retirement to get your very own FIRE number. Combine with the investment calculator to help develop your investment plan.
This formula, known as the 25x rule, is an estimate of how much money you’ll need in total to safely rely on the 4% rule. However, that might not be the right rate for you. This calculator should not be your sole source of information for making a financial decision.
